The splendour of Victorian and Edwardian life in St Annes is today nothing more than a fast-fading memory. When the ancient and modern communities combined - albeit reluctantly, in 1922 - the 'Opal of the West' quickly developed and fortunes soared. The beaches were filled with relaxed holiday makers and St Annes' pier echoed with the laughter of daytrippers. Author Biography:

Peter Byrom has lived on the Lancashire coast for many years, firstly in Blackpool before moving to St Annes where he and his wife were proprietors of a general store and, before retirement, House Managers of two large complexes of private apartments. He likes to travel, especially to Italy, and is a keen local and family historian and photographer.
