Description

The number of aircrew of Bomber Command who lost their lives during the Second World War was 55,573, yet no campaign medal was awarded and their bravery and sacrifice went largely unrecognised. On 28 June 2012 this was corrected with the dedication and unveiling of the Bomber Command Memorial in The Green Park, London. The journey from the initial idea to the unveiling of the memorial was a long and complex one and 'The Bomber Command Memorial - We Will Remember Them' tells the story of the campaign; locating a site, obtaining permission, raising the funds, designing the memorial, and the opening ceremony. The book also tells the remarkable story of Bomber Command from the viewpoint of those who took part, and veterans reflect on the experiences they had and what the memorial means to them. AUTHOR: Robin Gibb, one of the most successful musicians of all time, gained international acclaim as a member of the Bee Gees and as a solo artist. As a former President of the Heritage Foundation, Robin was at the forefront of the campaign for the Bomber Command Memorial. Jim Dooley had a distinguished career in the music industry, with the pop group The Dooleys. Jim took up the mantle of championing the cause for the Bomber Command Memorial when the idea was first formed. Since then he has tirelessly set about securing funds as Director of Fund Raising. Gordon Rayner is Chief Reporter of The Daily Telegraph and has been a national newspaper reporter for 15 years. The Telegraph has been one of the major supporters of the Bomber Command Memorial campaign. b/w and colour illustrations
