Description

The fascinating scope of Swedish history, from prehistory to the Viking settlers to the advanced social welfare state of today. In previous eras, when Americans thought of Sweden they would likely conjure up visions of Viking raiders and settlers. Today, Americans might think about the contemporary Sweden which is one of the world's most advanced nations in terms of politics, social welfare, gender equality, standard of living, technology, the arts, and participation in regional and global developments. Byron Nordstrom traces the history of Sweden, detailing its prehistory and Viking past, and shows how a country governed for years by a European monarchial system, changed slowly, and at times grudgingly, into the egalitarian, democratic system of today. This concise, and clearly written narrative account is perfect for students and anyone interested in the history, people, and culture of this Scandinavian nation. Starting with an introduction which provides data on Sweden's geography, people, and government, the book then examines the political and cultural history of the country in six chapters. Also included is a biographical section with portraits of more than 50 noteworthy Swedes, a bibliographical essay, and an index. The History of Sweden is complete and the most up-to-date general history of the country available.
