They were a powerful tribe, dreaded by other tribes. They fought to gain ground to dwell on and hunt. The Sioux are the only American Indians to ever defeat the U.S. Army. Chief Red Cloud won the war bearing his name. He went to war because the U.S. Army broke the Treaty of Laramie. After The U.S. Cavalry massacred many Cheyenne and Sioux villages, Chief Sitting Bull and 2,000 Arapaho, Cheyenne and Sioux Indians finally massacred Lieutenant. Colonel George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry at the Little Bighorn in retaliation. Much of Sitting Bull's life is portrayed in the book.
