Description

This is the ultimate guide to the New Zealand seashore. New Zealand has over 14,000 kilometres of coastline, the tenth longest length of coast in the world, which ranges from sheltered sandy beaches to rocky and rugged wilderness. This geographic diversity supports a wide range of seashore life, all of which is photographed and described in this book. Originally published in a smaller format in 2017, this new edition has been increased in size to show off the superb photography of Rod Morris, and to make identification much easier. Sally Carson's text is packed with information on endemic and introduced species, including sponges, anemones, sea stars, shrimps and crabs, barnacles, paua, mussels, oysters, fish and seaweed. This is the most up-to-date and comprehensive guide available to this country's seashore, an essential purchase for any New Zealander who appreciates our unique coastal environment.

Author Biography:

Sally Carson is an environmental educator and marine scientist with considerable experience leading educational initiatives where school students and the wider community engage with the marine environment, develop science skills and learn how to be kaitiaki for the coast. She has been the driver behind a number of community education initiatives including the Aquavan, and Marine Metre Squared, a national citizen science project on long term monitoring of the NZ seashore. Sally is currently the director of the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre, Dept of Marine Science, University of Otago. Rod Morris is a wildlife photographer, documentary- maker, and natural historian who has contributed to some 30 books over the course of his career. His particular interest lies in collaborating on field guides and other nature books accessible to children, where his nature photography can showcase not only the characteristic features of our lesser-known native animals and plants, but also unique aspects of their behaviour.
