This text is a study in the ethics of war. It focuses on the moral dilemmas of resistance and collaboration in Nazi-occupied Europe, including an examination of Jewish resistance. It presents a guide to the ethical choices that confronted people in response to the German doctrine of collective responsibility: reprisals killings and hostage taking. Also included is a discussion of violations of the Laws of War (especially torture) by the resistance.

Author Biography:

RAB BENNETT is Senior Lecturer in Politics and currently lectures on The Ethics of War and The Holocaust at Manchester Metropolitan University. He has taught at University College, Swansea and University of Liverpool.
