journey. It traces his emergence as a goal-scoring sensation in English league
football.
Born into a crowded household in
Romiley in the north of England in November 1902, Frank’s journey gathered
momentum after enlisting with the South Wales Borderers in April 1918.
Subsequently he honed his
considerable sporting talents in Wales and later on the playing fields of
India.
He was determined to establish a
footballing career upon returning to England and signed with Stockport County.
During the late 1920s and early 1930s he enjoyed extraordinary seasons with
Stockport, Fulham and Reading.
Before a broken leg terminated his
career, he had established an outstanding goal-scoring strike rate of over 0.9
goals per game.
Author Biography
Nicolas de Jong undertook
postgraduate studies at Montreal’s McGIll University before being appointed
Provincial Archivist of Prince Edward Island in 1972. His interest in Canadian
wooden shipbuilding resulted in two publications : ‘Launched from Prince Edward Island’, and ‘Shipbuilding on Prince Edward
Island, 1787-1920’. On returning to England he worked
for HMG. After retiring he moved to Chiang Mai before returning to
Lincolnshire.
A keen sportsman and life-long Fulham supporter, his
research now relates to the off-shore impact of early British touring sides on
the beautiful game.
