During its long history the iconic Duxford Airfield has seen many changes. Established in 1917 as a Great War training establishment it later became a fighter station and went on to become a lynch pin during the Battle of Britain. After transferring to the USAAF it played an important part in its aerial campaign against Germany, and the post-war period saw it having a critical role in Britain’s Cold War strategy. Following a quiet period after the eventual departure of the RAF, it saw service during the making of the award-winning Battle of Britain movie. After another uncertain period, the Imperial War Museum moved in, with the result that Duxford Airfield has now been transformed into an international tourist attraction. Its future is now assured
