The Lightning That Changed Everything
It began on a warm afternoon in the heart of the Australian outback.
The café was quiet, save for the gentle hiss of the fryer and the hum of flies outside the dusty window. A young boy stood at the kitchen bench, humming to himself as he sliced fresh potatoes, their pale edges curling under the knife.
In his shirt pocket, a handful of thin, sun-dried twigs poked out-souvenirs from a wander outside. He had picked them without thinking, simply because they felt smooth and strange in his hand. Then the sky darkened.
Not the slow dimming of a sunset, but the sudden, electric hush that comes before something extraordinary.
The first crack of thunder split the air like a drum. The boy jumped, scattering potato slices onto the bench.
The second came faster, louder…followed by a flash so fierce it turned the café white.
The lightning struck not outside, but inside.
It leapt through the fryer, dancing over the golden fries, wrapping them in a shimmering glow. It touched the twigs in the boy’s pocket, weaving wood and potato into something entirely new.
And just for a heartbeat, the fries on the counter moved.
Eyes blinked open where none had been. Limbs twitched, stretching for the first time. A spark…not of heat, but of life…flickered deep inside.
The Fries Family had come to life!
THE SECOND LIGHTNING STRIKES
Not too far from the Tucker N Chips cafe, nestled under the same wide Australian sky, stood a burger joint that every truck driver, tourist, and wombat knew by name: Big Buns Burger Bar.
Tessa, a little girl, worked at this Burger Bar. She walked hurriedly, as she was late to work.
The smell of beef patties and grilled onions filled the air.
The “Big Buns Burger Bar”, a worn-down yet wildly popular burger shack, buzzed with the clatter of pans, the hum of a fridge older than the owner and excitedly preparing for lunch.
It was famous for its juicy, oversized burgers and its young, hardworking kitchen assistant…a clever girl named Tessa. Tessa loved burgers. She didn’t just make them… she crafted them, with the care of an artist and the precision of a scientist.
Tessa danced to music only she could hear through her oversized headphones.
That afternoon, she was stacking the soft sesame buns, slicing pickles into perfect circles, and singing along to her favourite playlist.
She was slicing tomatoes with lightning speed. Arranging lettuce like she was building a salad skyscraper. And on the prep bench: four glorious burger buns stacked beside juicy, hand-pressed beef patties.
She paused to admire her work.
“Perfect,” she grinned. “These are gonna be art.“
She reached for her special sauce bottle-just as the air snapped with an electric charge.
And then it happened… just like over at the “Tucker N Chips” café…
Lightning ripped through the sky and slammed through the burger bar’s rusty roof. It wasn’t natural lightning. It shimmered with golden spirals, flickered with blue sparks, and struck directly onto the tray of burgers with a sound like a deep fryer screaming.
It lit up the entire kitchen like a disco party from another planet.
Tessa screamed, flying backward into a crate of onions.
When she peeked through her tangled hair, smoke curled into the air.
There they were, blinking at Tessa….
