Gothic Print Culture, 1789-1900

This volume centers on gothic novels popularized by William Lane’s Minerva Press and other circulating libraries. Lane and his competitors, such as Thomas Hookham, are considered as key to understanding how the print market changed to meet the needs of an increasingly literate public; this volume understands the gothic novel as part of this shift. The volume also includes images related to each text, including frontispieces, title pages, illustrations, and advertisements. Accompanied by extensive editorial commentary, this title will be of great interest to students of literature.

Author Biography

Jennifer Camden is the Beverley J. Pitts Distinguished Professor of the Ron and Laura Strain Honors College and Associate Chair and Professor of English at University of Indianapolis. She is the author of Secondary Heroines in the Nineteenth-Century British and American Novel (Routledge, 2010) and, with Kate Faber Oestreich, Transmedia Storytelling: Pemberley Digital’s Adaptations of Jane Austen and Mary Shelley (Cambridge Scholars, 2018), as well as articles on women writers and gothic fiction.

JoEllen DeLucia is Professor of English at Central Michigan University. She is the author of A Feminine Enlightenment: British Women Writers and the Philosophy of Progress, 1759-1820 (EUP, 2015), in addition to articles on women writes, moral philosophy, and gothic fiction published in Tulsa Studies in Women’s Literature, Women Writers, The Eighteenth Century: Theory and Interpretation, and European Romantic Review. Most recently, she edited with Juliet Shields Migration and Modernities: The State of Being Stateless, 1750-1850 (EUP, 2019).
