The village of Miagliano, in the Cervo Valley, is in the province of Biella, Piedmont region of Italy. This display of watercolour images is a follow up from the guide book: ‘Miagliano and its Secrets. Illustrated Guide to the Post-Industrial Village of Miagliano’, (2025). It represents the author’s artistic impression and expression, who although British was born here of a local family and spent her childhood roaming the streets of the village here portrayed. It is the first encounter of the author’s early years with the village that left an indelible mark in her heart; the longing for a past that more lively than ever eclipsed into languorous memories. These memories still whisper stories of work, love, loss, joy and hope and are intricately woven into the walls of the ancient buildings, some restored others standing forlorn at the mercy of the elements. As the author walks through the village, the recollection of the people who once inhabited here, their eyes, voices, faces and social circumstances explode into life at each step like a minefield bringing back feelings coloured by perception and the faint recognition of a mystic bygone era. The nostalgic longing that pervades our souls is stronger when associated with the innocence of childhood and the art in this book is a representation of that lost time that still lingers through the streets, alleyways and buildings of Miagliano.
