Middlesex County, Virginia Order Book Abstracts, 1694-1697 contains entries from Middlesex County, Virginia Order Book No. 2, 1680-1694 beginning on page 701 and ending on page 726 for courts held 3 September 1694 through 13 November 1694; and Middlesex County, Virginia Order Book No. 3, 1694-1705 beginning on page 1 and ending on page 169 for courts held 22 November 1694 through 1 February 1696/1697. County court order books contain records of all matters brought before the court while in session.
The information contained in these records may not appear elsewhere. The order books typically provide a synopsis of court cases in a relatively organized format. Records you may find include appointments of local officials, records of legal disputes such as property disputes, estate disputes, and disputes involving slaves and servants, certificates granted for apprehending runaway servants and delivering letters, and much more. This information is similar to our present-day small claims and civil courts. An index to full names, places and subjects adds to the value of this work.
