Introduction to the Olinguito
Overview and Discovery
The olinguito (scientific name Bassaricyon neblina) is one of the most captivating and recently discovered mammals in the Western Hemisphere.
Though small and elusive, it has sparked significant interest in the scientific community and among wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.
The olinguito is a member of the Procyonidae family, which includes raccoons, coatis, kinkajous, and olingos. It is a nocturnal, arboreal mammal that dwells primarily in cloud forests across the Andes Mountains of Colombia and Ecuador. What makes the olinguito’s story especially fascinating is its discovery timeline.
Despite living in relatively accessible areas and belonging to a family of animals well studied by zoologists, the olinguito eluded science for centuries.
It was officially recognized as a new species in 2013 by Dr. Kristofer Helgen, a mammalogist at the Smithsonian Institution. This discovery was not the result of a new expedition or finding the animal in the wild for the first time but rather a meticulous re-examination of museum specimens that had been misclassified for decades.
Scientists initially confused the olinguito with its close relatives, the olingos, due to their similar appearance and habitat.
