The surviving documents from the Synod of Hochst are a series of brief Latin letters. They reveal a deep anxiety caused by apostolic missions but find solace in conscience. Aribo of Mainz entrusts a secret to a trusted recipient, hoping to alleviate sorrow through compassion and shared counsel. The letters discuss the unjust interdiction of the author’s pallium honor, praises the kindness of a bishop, and stresses the value of attending a forthcoming council near Mainz. Emphasizing the tradition of holding general councils twice yearly, the author laments the Church’s decline from former vitality and calls for renewed unity and adherence to ancient ecclesiastical precepts. The letter concludes by soliciting advice on dealing with the apostolic legation and underscores collective prayer and support among church dignitaries.
