Teddy’s World Tour Short Summary – “Teddy’s World Tour.”
The plush bear Teddy is small and soft. It has round ears, caramel fur, and a smile sewn in blue thread. He lives on Mina’s shelves. Mina is a child who keeps her room full of stories by collecting feathers, smooth beach stones, and a popcorn-salted ticket stub. A patchwork scarf made from old clothes bits is wrapped around Teddy’s neck. The bright red color comes from an old dress, the green from a picnic blanket, and the sky blue from a shirt that got too small. There is a button on the scarf that looks like a map. She tells him, “This button will help you find your way,” in the afternoon light. Ted doesn’t know if buttons can lead bears, but he holds on to the dream that they can.
Mina opens her grandmother’s bag on a rainy Saturday. With a nice click of the locks, a world map that smells like old paper and pine opens up. The names of the countries sound like music when Mina reads them aloud. The oceans curl and the countries glow in many colors. Teddy’s heart beats faster. He thinks about clouds and trains, drums and lanterns, gardens and markets, new foods, new words, and new friends, until the room’s edges feel as far away as the sky.
It gets quiet in the house that night, and the rain taps on the windows. The compass button starts to glow, from a small spark to a steady light. With a gentle breeze, Teddy sets the map out on the floor. It looks like the paper is breathing. The compass flashes again, and a small red dot lights up like an offer. It sounds like someone is saying, “Go see.”
Teddy pulls his scarf tighter and puts a small notebook, a pencil that is about the length of a finger, and a small keepsake pouch into the backpack that is already there. He then looks back at Mina’s nightlight and sees that the lampshade has turned into a little moon. He says he will bring stories to your house. The door closes with a click. Teddy starts his trip to learn about the world with a sound that is both soft and steady, like a dream.
