The Gravity of Grief & Joy

Denise stood, and Christopher met her with a smile so warm it made my breath catch. He guided her to the dance floor, her hand in his, his posture soft with care. She wore a deep plum dress and a shawl with floral stitching that shimmered under the lights. They swayed slowly, easily- like this was their own quiet world. I felt a pull inside me. Not of jealousy- but of something deeper. A longing and a peace, layered in the same breath.

I would never be the one on that floor. I wouldn’t be the arms he ran to as a child or the one who tucked him in after nightmares. I didn’t hold his hand at the bus stop or cry through the first day of school.

Denise did. She did all the work. And she did it with a kind of love that left no doubt.

Watching them dance wasn’t just witnessing a milestone. It was witnessing the reward of years of quiet devotion – the scraped knees, the hard conversations, the unwavering presence – all rising to the surface in that single, slow rotation under the lights.
