Twelve new Star Scouts put their firsthand the ship’s windows at dawn to gauge the day’s size. After studying star charts, practicing rope walks in “space” around the pool, and whispering flashlight messages across dorm halls, they fell asleep. Their initial aim was to reach Aurora Station, the entrance to the deepest trade lanes.
A space star, Aurora. Like whales returning home, ships from distant colonies cruise by it. Like sailors reading cliff fires, a safe blink signifies “go” while a danger blink signals “slow down, listen, and wait.” In the dark, those blinks look like signs of help written in light.
Beyond the station, the intelligent Chromafield aurora sparkles. Light-based Glimmerfolk live there. The blinking beats convey thoughts, feelings, and tales. It will teach Scouts to say hello, be patient, and listen when words can’t be uttered.
Twelve cadets cover their heads with blueberry coats and touch their hearts’ silver stars. Many are courageous, some apprehensive, but all are ready-they know their plans, have their laces double-tucked, and have bravery snacks. No one noticed the jealous joke that made everyone at the station gaze at the signal towers and cargo rings or the mischievous gremlin eating static like candy. An experience requires you to be gentler and steadier than the day before.
Engines get warm. Shaking launchpad. Twelve helmet seals click. Scouts say: share your light, steady your hands, listen first, and correct the next minor thing. Commander Imani’s calm voice floods the radio. Clamps loosen. The sky gets bigger. A colorful ribbon is greeting you ahead. Many small braveries grow in twelve boxes. The story has captivated them, but they don’t know how smart, kind, or nice to be.
