Prof. Joseph Canisius Ndunguru (PhD) is a distinguished Tanzanian plant virologist, seasoned research leader, and public science communicator who has dedicated over two decades to agricultural advancement in Africa. Currently serving as the Director General of the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA), Prof. Ndunguru has previously led prominent agricultural research institutions including the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) and the Mikocheni Agricultural Research Institute. With a PhD in Plant Pathology/Virology from the University of Pretoria, his scientific journey has spanned the globe-from Zambia and South Africa to international research hubs in the United States and Europe. Prof. Ndunguru’s work focuses on plant virus diagnostics, genetic resistance to crop diseases, and sustainable agricultural practices. His leadership in regional projects has catalyzed breakthroughs in cassava and maize disease control, benefitting millions across sub-Saharan Africa. Beyond science, Prof. Ndunguru is a passionate advocate for empowerment through knowledge and inspiration.
