Why withe cover?
Once upon a summer, the alleys smelled of burning paper. Smoke spiraled from every chimney, even in the heat.
At home, my father stood over a big metal basin, poking the fire. Books were burning-white-covered books, old favorites, classics: Steinbeck, Hemingway, Jack London, Victor Hugo-all crunching, curling, turning to ash.
I asked, “Why are you burning them?“
“They come into houses,” he said. “If you have political books, they take you away.“
“But these are just stories and novels,” I said.
“That’s what you think,” he replied. “They only know one book-and that’s all they accept. White cover:
Books that were banned and unprintable until a few weeks ago were being printed quickly during the 1979 Revolution, on any topic or with any content. The speed of printing was such that there was no time to design a beautiful cover. They were all printed with white covers and cheap white cardboard. Some didn’t even have a title, or the title was handwritten or stamped on the white cover،
And so it happened that the book, as your best friend with its white cover, could take your life.
