Why Death Matters

Death is an inevitable biological certainty, but in India, too often, it is also engineered, not by design in the sense of cold, calculated plans, but rather by the slow decay of systems that were meant to protect life. Roads crumble into traps. Hospitals choke for breath. Ancient beliefs masquerade as medical truth. Paperwork outlives people. Poison seeps into lungs and rivers while policies nap in air-conditioned offices.
An “engineered death” is a fatality that moves beyond the realm of pure chance or an individual misstep. It is a death that can be traced back through a causal chain of institutional apathy, infrastructural decay, policy paralysis, and social sanction. It is the predictable result of a system that normalizes unacceptable risk. The examples I will present here move beyond proximate causes, such as a speeding driver, a sudden flood, or a building’s groan before its collapse.
This book is not about death as a philosophical event. It is about death as an indictment of failed systems. It is about lives lost due to choices we make, which many of us inaccurately term as something beyond our control. From medical negligence to collapsed infrastructure, from delayed ambulances to denied care, I will present how I examine how each preventable death is not a personal loss alone but a collective failure.
