Badly kept main-stage-leaping, aspirational indie-rock secrets don’t come much bigger than BIIG Time, the tune machine side-project cranked by DMA’s guitarist, Johnny Took and his brother, PLANET’s singer, Matthew Took, and yet the wait for album news has lasted… until now.
The duo has finally, officially announced the release date for their long-awaited debut by releasing its first shoegazey, emphatic, big-chorused single, Bigger Than Nothing – OUT NOW. Adding poignancy to the release, Bigger Than Nothing’s video features never-before-seen, deeply personal, fly-on-the-wall home video footage of the brothers’ childhoods in Sydney, opening a window into a “life-long friendship that shines through their songs and harmonies.” A year after Johnny Took enjoyed the most recent run of longdistance flights and late nights associated with the release of DMA’s Official UK Album Chart Top 3 album, How Many Dreams? the Sydneysiders break temporarily from their motherships to confirm their own 11– track collection.
Given the title 200K and released on Fri 9 May 2025 on All Sorted Records, BIIG Time’s official announcement follows high-profile live warm-ups on the Australian dates of Courteeners and Jamie Webster. Hiding in plain sight, following the release of their 2020, standalone debut single, It’s You, their intriguing West Coast-by-garage rock counterpoint to DMA’s emotive, arena-filling indie left onlookers wondering what might come next. Five years on, Bigger Than Nothing finds the pair confident that, for every note of introspection the single holds, there’s ample confidence in the joy 200K will spread. “‘Bigger Than Nothing’ is our first release since our first and only single ‘It’s You’ back in 2020!
It’s quintessential BIIG TIME,” says the band. “Harmonies the whole way through and distorted guitars. Lyrically it’s full of tongue in cheek self-deprecation and floating in and out of the feeling of not being good enough for people and situations around you. “It’s the first single from the album, which is a collection of gems that we have written over the years. We couldn’t be prouder to share this first taste.” Chalking up four DMA’s albums and a worldwide fanbase, not least in the UK, a story that started with their 2016 debut album, Hills End, Took is no stranger to arenas and main stage festival appearances. Meanwhile, Matthew’s PLANET’s band, catapulted by the release of their 2022 debut album, Information Overload, have already supported the likes of Liam Gallagher. To Follow.
