Aviation safety is a subject which affects us all, whether as employees, passengers or even external third parties. This case study of Australian aviation is aimed not only at the aviation industry but also at other transport modes, high technology and manufacturing industries where there are similarities. It represents an attempt to contribute to the pool of knowledge across a number of disciplines both within aviation and in the wider community. Using both primary and secondary data and a structured methodology, the research was designed, not to prove a particular point, but rather to promote a system level understanding of the factors behind aviation safety.
Author Biography
Graham Braithwaite completed undergraduate studies in Transport Management and Planning. In 1997 he moved to the Department of Aviation at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, where he is now a Lecturer, specialising in safety and human factors. Dr. Braithwaite has worked on a range of projects with the aviation industry and has consulted for the likes of Qantas, Ansett, Airservices Australia and the UK CAA. He also teaches on Loughborough University’s air transport degree program.
