Life for thirteen-year-old Sammy never changed much Living in the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. That is until he finds himself and orphan along with his seven-year-old sister, Birdie. A pledge he made to keep them out of the state home requires them to learn the art of lying, for if anyone found out their parents had died, they would lose the only thing left of their parents – the farm. As bad as the land had become, no farm animals and no gardens, it had been the only home they knew. Lies are plenty now, but food is scarce. How long can they fool the townspeople and how will he find a way to feed himself and Birdie? These questions followed his every actions until a stranger came into their lives. The question of continuing a life of lies and stealing nagged his every thought. Sammy must come to a decision of giving up everything or continue even after their lives are threatened. Sammy’s story is one of determination against all odds and compassion in the face of adversity.
