Most of the rubble had been cleared, but the Central Coast was still edgy six weeks after the Loma Prieta Earthquake, when Los Lobos and Santana rocked the football field of the Watsonville High School on November 26th 1989, in a less volatile, but more spiritually uplifting way, about 40 days later. Three different venues were used for relief concerts promoted by legendary promoter Bill Graham who bestowed the title ‘Earthquake Relief — It’s Everybody’s Fault’ upon the occasion. Los Lobos had last performed locally at the 1987 Santa Cruz County Fair but came to this event armed with a Grammy for their Spanish language album ‘La Pistola y El Corazon’. Covering songs from the preceding six years and albums such as ‘And A Time To Dance’, ‘How Will The Wolf Survive’ and ‘By The Light Of The Moon’ the ‘little band from East LA’ ripped through a rich back catalogue to end with ‘Shakin’ Shakin’ Shakes’ – an appropriate end to the event.
Timeline pays homage to a hidden gem from LA’s fiery Latin rockers with a fully restored and professionally remastered KQED-TV broadcast. Presented with background notes and photos.
