Fiber-Optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing: Principles and Applications offers a comprehensive exploration of fiber optic distributed acoustic sensors (DAS), presenting both foundational principles and practical applications. The book is structured in three sections: the first delves into the theoretical underpinnings of DAS technology, illuminating essential optical components, the principles of Rayleigh scattering, and the mechanisms for spatial resolution using optical time-domain and frequency-domain reflectometry. With clear explanations and detailed diagrams, it guides readers through the science that enables DAS systems to detect and interpret acoustic signals along optical fibers.
The book also highlights the broad industrial impact of DAS, covering applications in structural health monitoring, security, geophysical exploration, and seismic observation. Importantly, the text addresses the ongoing development of industry standards, making it a valuable resource for those interested in the standardization and future evolution of DAS technology. Researchers and professionals in photonics, environmental monitoring, and optical communications will find this single volume both accessible and indispensable.
