The music featured on this recording represents a cross section of the traditional and contemporary music of the Maori people of New Zealand. From the masculine harmonies and vigorous Haka of Te Aute College, to the distinctive singing of St Joseph’s Maori Girls’ College who enjoy the distinction of having sold more recordings worldwide than any other Maori group – a fact of which they are justly proud.
Under the direction of their college principal and musical director at the time Georgina Kingi this recording features that special sound for which the college became renowned for. The items featured on this recording also have the distinction of being the first digital recordings of Maori music in New Zealand – when well over 100 voices were recorded in the magnificent meeting house at St Josephs. Imposing in design, it boasts superb acoustics which do much to enhance the vocal efforts of the now legendary performance.
