Arthur’s most coveted, storied 12” finally comes to light of day, replete in its Danny Krivit and Tony Morgan mixes, featuring Peter Zummo, Julius Eastman and Allen Ginsberg on board, and long hailed as a peak of NYC’s disco-not-disco era that swirled limbs at the Loft and ever since. 100% essential!
Disco, garage, and avant-garde all at once, ‘In the Light of the Miracle’ is more simply an ultra club classic beloved by successive waves of dancers since its original version became a staple at the Loft as a dubplate during the ‘80s. It would emerge in truncated album form on the posthumous set ‘Another Thought’, but DJs and diggers have long known that longer, deeper edits by Danny Krivit and Tony Morgan existed in the vaults, as famously discovered on tapes by Philip Glass, and initially snaffled for release by Gilles Peterson’s Talking Loud, where it only reached a white label pressing n 1996, which has understandably become a grail ever since.
This edition now represents its first commercial voyage, resplendent in a club-ready, 45rpm pressing ready to elevate ‘floors to a whole other plane. The 13min+ A-side is maybe best known from its inclusion on the Soul Jazz compilation ‘The World of Arthur Russell’, and still spellbinds with its rolling layers of hand-played percussion, bluesy Fender Rhodes and vocals arranged in a stealth ebb and flow that achieves disco transcendence without tricks or stunts, just a mesmerising, sinuous tessellation of the elements prone to leave dancers tingling.
Its housier B-side mix by Tony Morgan makes its first commercial appearance here. Hingeing around claps, cowbells and vocals thizzed higher in the mix, and propelled by a rolling bass heft, it takes an even longer view on the original for 15mins of pared back late ‘80s / early ‘90s suss, notably inflected with extra guest vox by Allen Ginsberg, and giving more room in the mix for Elodie Lauten’s vocal counterpoint to bloom. As with the top side, both benefit from due care in the new mastering by Cicely Balston for Alchemy at AIR Studios, sealed for posterity and contemporary soundsystem demands.
