Prince Henry St. Clair, Earl of Orkney

This fascinating full-color children’s book is brightly illustrated and brilliantly written by one of the true British Faerie Art geniuses of our day, Hazel Brown. It is told from the vantage point of a young lad, and is based on the true story of Henry St. Clair, Jarl of Orkney, known the world over as ‘Prince Henry’. One hundred years before Columbus, this princely ruler of the Orkney Iles of Scotland, along with his Admiral, Antonio Zenos, a prominent Italian navigator of the day, undertook a brave voyage to the coast of Nova Scotia, and southward, making friends with the Native Mic Macs. Author Biography

I have been a creative artist in all its forms for a great number of years, which has included illustration and calligraphy, also through teaching, both adults and children. I have collaborated with other artists on books on the Worlds of Faerie, worked closely with Brian Froud on the “Lady Cottington” books as a calligrapher, and produced paintings for a number of galleries on the subjects which inspire me, the sea and the landscape of Dartmoor where I lived. Growing up by the sea, and spending long days sailing with my grandfather in his fishing boat, having the freedom to explore and investigate, with all manner of adventures, developed my imagination. I was greatly honoured to be included on the St. Clair Project, and to be invited to write, illustrate and design a book about Sir Henry St. Clair, Earl of Orkney. The research was extremely interesting and exciting. I became totally captivated by the story. I feel today’s children, even with all the technology they have to hand, still need to hear the amazing stories and legends that surround our islands and especially about the bravery and courage of those men who took part in the Crusades and who set out to discover new lands across the Atlantic. At present I am working on a children’s novel about the adventures of a little boy who has embarked on a journey with a group of faerie characters in a quest to rescue a magic Book of Wisdom. I am also continuing my exploration on canvas into the landscape which I find to be so inspiring.
