Soothy the Sentinel

Soothy the Sentinel Seahorse is a magical glimpse of life on a mythical coral reef authored by a Cuban refugee whose childhood escape was frolicking in the turquoise Caribbean Sea while his vivid imagination spun spectacular tales about the sea creatures that live there. Children will be inspired to become like Soothy – a trustworthy protector of the coral reef and all of its diverse inhabitants and their families. Coral reefs serve the same purpose as the canaries of the coal mines: we know that life cannot be sustained when they begin to die. Coral reefs have declined by 40 percent worldwide since we began measuring. However, it is not too late for humans to restore and preserve the oceans. That’s where this book can help. Teachers and parents can use this book to inspire children to care deeply about the coral reefs: First, simply read the story through and enjoy the adventure of Soothy the Seahorse Sentinel. The second reading, children can be asked to search for a hidden picture on each page that doesn’t belong in the ocean. This is an opportunity for adults to explain that plastic, fishing line, trash and chemicals hurt the ocean and the sea creatures. Children will likely notice that one page is in black and white, and yes, it is his or her job to color it in. Finally, children can take the pledge to help Soothy protect the coral reefs, and learn the creed so they know how. When children understand what is at stake, they will take the steps that are needed to protect our purifying oceans and save the lives of millions of amazing sea species that live underwater.
