SPIT is the raw and electrifying memoir of Jonnie Park-better known by his rap moniker, Dumbfoundead-whose rise from an unruly childhood in Los Angeles’s iconic Koreatown kid to international rap star is as unlikely as it is exhilarating.

Born in Argentina to Korean parents and smuggled by a coyote across the US-Mexico border at age three, Park grew up in L.A. amid cultural dislocation, his father’s violent alcoholism, and the turbulent protests and riots of the early 1990s.

Searching for belonging, he found salvation in the highly competitive underground world of battle rap, where he was among the only successful Asian American battle rappers. He developed his freestyle superpowers amid a motley crew of characters at Project Blowed, the legendary South Central L.A. open-mic venue, many of whom went on to big careers in the music industry.

Author Biography

Jonnie Park, also known by his stage name Dumbfoundead, is a multi-hyphenate entertainer from Koreatown, California. He first gained acclaim in the battle rap arena, where his lightning-quick wit and self-aware humor captivated foes and fans alike. These talents have propelled Jonnie beyond music into standup comedy, acting, and writing. He starred in Hulu’s Emmy-winning film Quiz Lady, and is a featured writer on the second season of the Emmy-winning show Beef. Jonnie’s next big project is the feature film K-POPS!, which he co-wrote with his longtime friend and collaborator Anderson .Paak. He currently resides in Los Angeles.

Donnie Kwak is a versatile content creator with expertise across video, digital, and print media. His work spans a wide array of topics, including music, pop culture, and sports. Over his 14-year career at Complex, Donnie created standout projects like the comedy series Desus vs. Mero. Before rejoining Complex in 2020, he served as East Coast Bureau Chief at Bill Simmons’s The Ringer and held roles at ESPN, Vibe, and 88Rising. Donnie lives in Brooklyn with his two cats, Tony and Tasha.
