It started when I had walked to the beach front at Kaknek Lake in Alaska; I surprised a grizzly bear and her cub. When she saw me, she growled. I backed away slowly, my head hunched over to convey to the mother bear that I wasn’t a threat to her or her cub. After what seemed like an eternity, I finally made my way back to the trailhead and Sandy. We proceeded to walk to the campground. As we proceeded slowly, step by step, I could see the unhappy bear in the corner of my eye staring at us the whole time. Author Biography

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: “I’ve always felt it was worse to never do something because I was afraid to do it, then to do it and fail. With this ethos, I pursued my passion for wildlife photography” Pat Toth-Smith. As a woman, Pat Toth-Smith has had to battle with the difficulties of traveling, hiking, and camping alone in a male dominated profession in her pursuit of bears, wolves’, wild horses and other hard to find wildlife. Her knowledge as a master wildlife photographer with more than 20 years of experience and her frightening wildlife encounters bring her book alive and seem to amaze and enthrall the reader. Pat’s book “Wild Among Us: true adventures of a female photographer who stalks bears, wolves, mountain lions and other elusive wildlife”, won USA’s best book award, a gold medal in the Living Now Awards and a bronze medal in the a e-Lit awards. In the summer of 2015, Pat was a guest on over 25 radio stations, including many NPR stations around the USA promoting her book. Besides her continued success as a wildlife photographer/author she has become a featured guest speaker at conferences and educational events promoting “facing your fears”.
