Cranford looks back at a time gone by, it is very true to the history of village life in England A good example of caring, sharing; the qualities that were the backbone of rural English life, which in turn made the nation strong in times of war etc.
This is quite an engaging story about a small town in 19th Century England not wanting to allow the railway to come as it will change their very sedate way of life.
The Cranford Collection includes Cranford and Return to Cranford boxed together for the first time.
This critically acclaimed and immensely popular BBC TV series follows the small absurdities and major tragedies in the lives of the people of Cranford. Created by Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin (Pride and Prejudice) and written by Heidi Thomas (I Capture The Castle, Madame Bovary, Lilies) The Cranford Collection features a Who’s Who of UK talent led by Judi Dench and including Francesca Annis, Eileen Atkins, Michael Gambon, Philip Glenister, Lesley Manville, Julia McKenzie, Imelda Staunton and Greg Wise.
Cranford (2007)
Cranford in the 1840s is a small Cheshire market town on the cusp of change. The
railway is pushing its way relentlessly towards the town from Manchester,
bringing fears of migrant workers and the breakdown of law and order. Judi Dench
plays Miss Matty Jenkyns, whose hopes and rebellious spirit was crushed when she
was forced as a young woman to give up Mr Holbrook (Michael Gambon), the man she
loved. The arrival of the dashing new doctor, Frank Harrison (Simon Woods) from
London causes a stir.
Stars: Judi Dench, Julia McKenzie, Imelda Staunton, Philip Glenister, Julia
Sawalha, Greg Wise, Francesca Annis, Jim Carter, Lesley Manville, Alex
Jennings.
Return to Cranford (2009)
It’s a year since her sister’s death and Miss Matty's house is full of
life and bustle, she has had the joy of seeing her brother return from India and
her dream of having a child in the house realised. The shadow of the railway
still looms but, to the relief of Matty and the Amazons, the line has been
halted five miles outside Cranford. For others, however, this spells disaster:
Captain Brown believes that modernisation is inevitable if the town is to
survive. Miss Matty intervenes in the affairs of a young person, living in an
isolated cottage outside the town but, when tragedy strikes, she fears that
unwittingly, she has opened Pandora’s box from which Cranford will never
recover.
Stars: Judi Dench, Claudie Blakley, Julia McKenzie, Alex Jennings, Francesca
Annis, Adrian Scarborough, Greg Wise, Tom Hiddleston, Imelda Staunton, Jim
Carter.
