Story: Will Oldham heads to Nashville with a collection of his songs to be re-recorded with session musos to see if they're hold up to the treatment. So for those of you who think that his singing is ‘highly questionable’ at the best of times, you just may be able to finally get on board with this album as Will is singing well within himself – adopting yet another persona – this time nashville slick hat-man. Or his version of it – which really isn't anything like you'd think it is. Most of the Palace Music gems get a seeing to: ‘Ohio River Boat Song’ (toe tappin straight country), ‘Gulf Shores’ (as jaw-droppingly beautiful as the original with added pedal steel – best thing here for sure), ‘Horses’ (sun sessions Johnny Cash guitar train wreck)… the list goes on. Fans will NEED to have it – marginal observers probably should get this and compare with the official best of (‘Lost Songs’) to see how good these songs hold up to any treatment given them.
