Another great quality game from the folks at Iello! A wargamers board game or a board gamers war game- Either way its a fun engaging way of playing WW2 battles without painting minis or feeling like its missing something.
The rule book could be better structured, but hang in there as the rules themselves are straightforward without feeling like they miss anything. There's also plenty of online help (and feebees) with forums and PDFs on the publishers website.
Somehow they've found the balance between the right depth on the table to be hugely engaging and a light enough that you're never wading through tables of statistics. For instance; shooting is generally rolling a single dice and adding benefits such as training or weapons and then comparing against the defence value of the target… All this is written on each units marker so all you need to do is roll the dice and look at the units on the table. No chunky books. Nice.
The scenario booklet builds your skills mission by mission and with the first games being 15–30mins you'll be well on your way in no time. Add to this a nice and simple army building mechanism and you'll be rolling tanks down he road Schnell!
To mix it up from the standard ‘I go, you go’ is the order mechanic allowing some bluff to outsmart your opponent as well as a small hand of cards to boost your abilities or adding some ‘fog of war’ to the best laid plans.
If your interested in fighting some WW2 battles but find wargames a bit too much in any of the usual ways: time, weight of rules, painting or dollars investment. This is probably the answer for you! You may even be able to get your kids or misses to play due to the cartoony graphics. :)
Often compared to Memoir44 this is definitely a more detailed beast. Example: Shooting is roll a normal D6, add attack bonuses, deduct defence bonuses and then compare against units base defence. While simple, this is much more a wargame than M44's simpler logos on the dice.
All up, a well rounded package with some nice rules that will keep old gamers happy with some new tweaks to refresh the tried and tested ‘I go, you go’ as well as being packaged up in an easy to learn format with awesome graphics for those new to the genre.
