The first few episodes of Earl are purty dang funny, and the rest of the season is solid. The premise is simple, the characters clearly defined (and in the case of Joy, impeccably portrayed), and let's face it, any network tv show about karma gets an extra star for that alone. We laughed a lot while watching this first season. I'd recommend it if you enjoy ironic comedy and a healthy dose of dumbassness. There are many moments of real hilarity. The second season falls into all the usual traps, though, so this may be as good as this show gets.
