Review
by Stuff.co.nz, Sage Forest
"I think this is a must-have book for the novice gardener of all ages.
The clean and colourful design by Amy Clay makes the picture-rich information easy to comprehend, and it has a sensible plastic jacket in case it ends up in the garden for reference.
It features a planting calendar and starts with the basics of how plants work, protecting them, sprouts, types of gardens one could make, pests, worms, compost and companion planting.
It covers a large range of veggies, as well as mushrooms, cactus and flowers.
I particularly like the little titbits of strange information: budgies like sprouted birdseed, how to grow a gherkin in a bottle, the largest radish in the world.
Best of all it has recipes with each vegetable. A hand symbol is used when an adult needs to supervise.
The only thing that annoyed me about the book was promoting the use of Tui products, like their child-safe slug and snail killer. A small price to pay though for a fine book.
A great present for a child who has an interest in nature."
