I deprecate such weapons of controversy, and do not think that they do credit to those who employ them. An institution so abominable as the State Church is here represented to be, must have long ago perished, as it would have deserved to perish, in the storm of univer'sal reprobation that it would have excited. It could not now be, as even its enemies admit that it is, stronger and more active than ever. Men do not tolerate what is described as being as bad as the cholera in their midst.
