Description

Excerpt from A Charge Delivered at the Fourth Visitation of His Diocese, at Manchester, Lancaster and Blackburn, on the 5th, 6th and 7th November, 1884 The moment, as I know, in inflaming passion: but I doubt even if the most ignorant hearer, when he grew calm, believed it all, or supposed that this iniquitous parson, this tyrannical State Church, were either of them quite so black as they have been painted. I deprecate such weapons of controversy, and do not think that they do credit to those who employ them. An institution so abominable as the State Church is here represented to be, must have long ago perished, as it would have deserved to perish, in the storm of univer'sal reprobation that it would have excited. It could not now be, as even its enemies admit that it is, stronger and more active than ever. Men do not tolerate what is described as being as bad as the cholera in their midst.
