But what a series! That's like being the third best musician of all time after John Lennon and Mozart. It's obvious to me that as the author himself described it this book was his “Kong” and he just had to overcome it to get into the rest of the series. Alot of plot points people were hoping to be explained or to be more fully fleshed out, prophecies to be fulfilled and mysteries to be answered weren't all remedied as people had hoped. Which in some ways makes the book a disappointment after such a long, long wait. But the crux of this is looking at this book as a standalone experience.
The book as a standalone experience has fantastic storylines and some great characterization and character growth. The book was focussed mainly on Jon, Tyrion and Dany and although Dany is a fan favourite I found her chapters mind-numbingly boring. That was my main problem with the story and any fans of the series will understand the love I have for not only the characters in the series but the setting. I love Westeros. Although Dany has never been to Westeros and isn't exactly a Westerosi character it was still annoying to me that half the book took place in Volantis and Meeren away from Westeros when all I wanted to get was answers to the questions posed in SoS and AFFC that centred around Westeros.
That being said the book is a fulfilling read and an engaging one. It's a great addition to the series but in all honesty it pales in comparison to Game of Thrones and A Storm of Swords. I'm hoping Winds of Winter finally gives us some of the answers us huge fans have been hoping for and Dance turns out to be a fantastic stepping stone to this next book as I have to take time to realise. This series is ongoing, and us fans have a long wait for the last two books.
Closing comments, if you've read all the way to A Feast for Crows, do not stop! Keep going! This book is rewarding and interesting, but I will say it's not on the same level of some of his other works in the series and it lacks abit of the pay-off people expected after their five year wait.
