Description

Fifth and last of Denis Jackson's definitive selections of the novellas of one of the greatest German writers of the 19th century, author of Der Schimmelreiter (The Dykemaster), Immensee, etc Contains the first and only English translation of Ein Doppelganger, a moving exploration of the problem of the rehabilitation of ex-prisoners 'This fine edition I am sure will significantly increase Storm's popularity. Translations of the high standard you have achieved are more than ever in demand.' - Mary Garland, editor of The Oxford Companion to German Literature (3rd edition), letter to the translator regarding his translation The Dykemaster The Doppelganger is the story of a reformed ex-prisoner who finds himself an unemployable outcast on release from prison, his crime having already been a consequence of harsh economic conditions in mid-19-century north Germany. The stark events of his life, pieced together after his death within an outer narrative, are in sharp contrast to his daughter's tender childhood memories of him. This subtly told tragic story has much to say to the present day.Aquis submersus, one of Storm's most celebrated tales, is a narrative tour de force linking the past with the present. The meaning of a mysterious inscription on the portrait of a dead child is gradually unravelled in the course of a story that is both a powerful critique of the landowning Junker class and a tragedy of passion.
