Excerpt from A Narrative of Events: Connected With the Introduction of Sulphuric Ether Into Surgical Use William thomas green morton was born in Charlton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, August 9, 1819. After receiving a New England common-school education, he came to Boston at the age of seventeen. Here he acted as clerk and salesman in various places of business but finally betook himself to Baltimore, Maryland, where he began the study of dentistry, in the College of Dental Surgery. In 1841 - 42 he began business at Farmington, Conn. There he became acquainted with Horace Wells, an exceptionally skilful dentist of an inventive turn of mind, who was then living in Hartford.
