Ames, Of the Johns Hop kins University, we secured the same spherical condenser that had been employed in the experiments Of 1879 and 1889, already referred to. The two balls were repolished and the two halves Of the shell were reground so that they fitted together water-tight. The two electrostatic capacities Of the condenser were redetermined, using first the larger ball and then the smaller ball within the shell. The electromagnetic capacity was found by means Of the Wheatstone bridge, using a rotating commutator. The experiments were begun early in the summer of 1904, but owing to the difficulty Of obtain ing sufficiently high insulation at that time they were deferred until the following winter. Meanwhile we designed a new rotating com mutator better fitted for this experiment than the one used in the preliminary work and had it constructed in the instrument shop of the Bureau.
