The use of this work as a text-book for four years has led the editor to the belief that a short and terse statement of the principles contained in a paragraph, printed in black type in a separate sentence immediately preceding the paragraph, will not only greatly facilitate a full understanding of the subject therein discussed, but will have great influence in inducing an enthusiasm for investigation on the part of the student.
