Description

Excerpt from An Attempt to Remove Prejudices Concerning, Vol. 1: The Jewish Nation; By Way of Dialogue To recommend fuch an examination, was all I ih tended when Iitiook up the pen; but no one who takes up the pen can tell when he {hall lay it down; and notwith pfianding'the importance Of that fubjee't, I mufi profefs, that I conlider it as of much inferior confequence to 'us, than that important point, which being conneeled therewith, I have been led to confider: it is.a fubjeft that hath ever fince the afcenfion of our Lord, been confi dered as the most important. Infidels have feoffed at us concerning it, and have aimed a heavy blow, which hath been fo powerfully felt, that it hath induced a very slearned prelate (bifhop W arburton) to evade the force Of it, ' by renouncinc an Opinion, which he acknowledges to have been an opinion Of the apoftolic age; in doing this, I think he has fallen into a dreadful error. I have endeavoured To shew the soundness OP the AH cient doctrine; the doetrine which he himfelf acknow ledges to be the ancient doc'trine; and TO prove that every authorized expectation OF the ancient christian church, I - iath been completely rea lized and accomplished.
