Description

Behavioral Strengths and Employment Strategies represents the author's "reverse engineering" of more than forty years of recruiting and employment management. Behavioral Strengths and Employment Strategies describes career progression as the convergence of two levels of self: the behavioral and the strategic. In the author's opinion, based on years of recruiting at all levels in different corporations, occupational success appeared to be related to five behavioral, or internal self-strengths, and five practical occupational strategies. When combined, behavioral strengths and occupational strategies appear to be a powerful predictor of occupational success. Strengths Strategies Chapter Chapter 1 Optimism 6 Action 2 Personality 7 Research 3 Interests 8 Resumes 4 Experience 9 Interviews 5 Affirmation 10 Negotiations Occupational Success Applicants who overcame job and career challenges used a combination of personal strengths along with cohesive occupational strategies. Successful applicants consistently promoted themselves above others competing for the same positions, garnering recognition and respect from managers and peers. Behavioral Strengths and Employment Strategies is based on the notion that combining individual strengths with practical occupational strategies will greatly increase the chances of occupational success. The Readiness Scale Knowing when, where, and how to start any project is half the battle. Whether building a house, or a project to gain reemployment, getting a sense of when, where and how to start is tantamount to achieving success. To that end, the next page includes the "Readiness Scale." Scores will not tell you how to start, but will help focus your attention on where to start. Treat the scale as another way to identify individual strengths and occupational strategies needed to achieve a lifetime of occupational success.

Author Biography:

Author's Background Jim McDonald's industry experience ranges from chemical process engineering to research and development, from civil engineering to defense electronics, from semiconductor manufacturing to information systems, and construction management. His forty-year career started in industrial relations for FMC's Inorganic Chemicals Division in Newark, California. In addition to his experience as a human resource consultant, Jim's corporate experience included positions for Stanford Research Institute (SRI International), Bechtel Engineering, Textron's Dalmo Victor Division (later acquired by the Singer Corporation, General Instrument, and the Litton Defense Industries), IT Solutions, and, finally, the URS Corporation. Jim's perspective on occupational success is rooted in his own experience in managing employee and corporate change during periods of substantial economic growth and recession, corporate acquisitions and divestures, and general upheaval. His experience spans the human resources life cycle, from employment to downsizing, from domestic to international compensation, from employee relations and unions to management training. Jim's experience has provided a unique insight on how individual strengths and smart occupational strategies have led many to occupational success. Professional Recognition In 2007, the Northern California Human Resource Association, a chapter of the National Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), granted Jim an Emeritus status for his leadership to NCHRA and for his dedication to the field of Human Resources. Jim is currently a member of SHRM, and the AOC, a national association of defense electronics organizations and specialists. Educational Background Jim received a BA in Psychology and a MS in Industrial Psychology, from San Francisco State University. His thesis, Measurement of Self-Perceptions of Supervisory and Subordinate Nursing Personnel, was funded under a grant from the State of California.
