"Lovely balance of classic and modern JRPG style"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

If you're looking to pour hours into a solid, fairly linear JRPG, then look no further. Bravely Default has what you need.

It sports a classic job based system, but with a twist of being largely customizable. You can equip one Job as a main, then add in the abilities of any other Jobs you have acquired to make your ultimate team.

The combat is turn based, like plenty of other RPGs, but spruced up with the brave and default additions, among other features. Choosing Brave grants your characters more actions per turn, but at the cost of not being able to act until they return to a positive number of battle points. Choosing Default is like defending in any other RPG, but you gain a battle point to use at another time. It adds a little more strategic value to how you plan your battles, and freshens up the whole experience.

The Story starts off as something completely cliché, especially coming from Square. The land has been plunged into turmoil as the Four Crystals have been engulfed in darkness. Each corresponding with an element, the earth is being torn asunder, the seas are becoming poisonous, volcanoes are erupting, and the wind has ceased. While the major plot point is to awaken these crystals, it seems something darker is lurking in the shadows. There is much more to this tale than originally revealed.

The Characters are almost archetypically as far from each other as possible, yet they come together by unconventional means. They all have their own agenda, yet are drawn together by fate, and whisked away on this grand adventure.

The Visuals are like something straight out of a story book, and the 3D effects are neither overbearing, nor underwhelming. The landscapes are beautiful and the cities and towns are all unique and well designed. The character models are a little bit of a weak point for the overall score, as they are a bit basic. Even so, they seem to fit the setting well, and don't bring the game down in my opinion.

The Music is certainly something to rival the Final Fantasy soundtracks (I'd be disappointed otherwise, coming from Square Enix.) However, variance in dungeons is something that lacks. While all the tracks are lovely on the ears, hearing the same songs in the same type of dungeons tends to leave one wanting a little more.

There is also a town-building mini-game that you gain access to quite early into the game, which rewards the player with access to rarer items, and things not bought anywhere else in the game. The building is all done in real time, and is enhanced with streetpass. If you find that you have no one you can streetpass, fear not, as you can connect to the internet and bring in people from all over the world who own the game.

Bravely Default is a game that takes the original style of JRPGs and brings it up to a completely new level. It builds off of just about everything that has been successful in the past, and gives it a much more modern feel. Overall, I think this game is absolutely fantastic, and if you find a copy of this (fairly) hard-to-come-by title, secure it! 5 Stars, 10/10, the whole shebang.

"Pushes the much ignored envelope"
5 stars"

A re-envisioned old style RPG, it really pushes the genre several steps forward on a relatively fresh console during an otherwise stagnant time period.

With pacing built both for old school fans who have less free time these days, and new fans who don't enjoy the hardcore grinding of the past, it has a much wider appeal than much of the genre

The story too though, not entirely revolutionary, shows the genius of Naotaka Hayashi who has written stories for other popular series such as Steins;Gate, and his skill is as apparent in Bravely Default as ever

"Great game"

Bravely Default is certainly a fun game. I have played quite a bit of this game and am still looking forward to doing more with it in the future.

Bravely Default, like most JRPGs, uses the turn-based combat system, similar to previous Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest games. The strategy of this is further enhanced by the brave and default system. Although this isn't necessarily revolutionary, standard setting stuff, it does increase the amount of thought and planning you put in to your battles. I definitely love how braving too much renders you unable to do anything for a few turns, so that you don't necessarily want to max-brave on everyone in boss battles, as you will be making yourself a sitting duck. Defaulting also is viable as not only does it raise Brave Points (BP), but provides a significant defensive bonus which you can utilize to not get one-hit-ko'd by some tough monsters or bosses.

Combat is also kept exciting through the myriad of jobs and abilities available. 24 different jobs keep you entertained and engaged as you plan your future ‘perfect’ team. In addition to the abilities you use in battle are ‘support’ abilities which provide passive bonuses to your team. This is a great feature, however the game does a poor job of explaining these early on, and kind of leaves you to figure things out for yourself. In addition to abilities are special moves which you may use after fulfilling certain conditions in battle. One thing I love about this is the ability to customize these special moves with effects, such as inflicting poison on the enemy, or curing your allies.

What I do hate about the battle system though is the ‘summon friend’ and ‘bravely second’ mechanics, which allow you to call up someone more powerful than you to attack for one turn or stop time to attack respectively. This just seems like cheating to me however, and I feel lowers the thought and planning needed to defeat a boss.

The option to turn down random encounters and the like seems pointless, as turning down encounters makes you ill-prepared for bosses, and turning them up just makes the game not fun.

The game's ‘mini-game’ of rebuilding the village of Norende offers the ability to get weapons, armour, special moves and items through selecting buildings to build and waiting real-time for it to be finished. I do beleive however that this is a rather disappointing aspect of the game, as in order for you to get weapons and armour beyond what you buy in the usual shops I feel you need to only upgrade the one building.

The story is interesting and engaging but very cliched. Also, it seems every single name (EVERY SINGLE NAME) is a pun, and I found myslef not taking the story seriously because of the ridiculousness of some of the names (e.g. Edea's mother is named Mahzer Lee which sounds an awful lot like motherly).

Overall, Bravely Default is a great and fun game if you like turn-based battles and the JRPG formula. I would not say that this could make someone love the genre, as it still seems unpolished, and at times, childish. However, its a great game and in my opinion better than many final fantasy games.

"This game though...."
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I thought of waiting for the price to go down but I couldn't wait…and Im glad I didn't.

This game…how could I have not pre-ordered this- Sincerely, this title is everything Final Fantasy fans desired in an FF title and more. They really put so much heart and thought into every stage, minor characters and soundtrack. I never really got attached to a character until I met Ringabel who I think is the best RPG character out there besides maybe Bartholomew Fatima from Xenogears :P

Once you purchase this game though…

keep moving forward. Keep playing. Don't give up. Don't settle for the EASY way out and still push through. That's all im going to say without giving away spoilers.

“where the fairy flies” INDEED.....

"The best JRPG I've played in years"
5 stars"

I've always been a fan of JRPGs, and bought Bravely Default on a whim when I found it had an English release – I wasn't expecting to be completely sucked in to an exciting, breathtaking story with a hell of a twist. This game restored my flagging faith in the genre, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a fulfilling story and a challenging, addictive battle system.

"Great So Far."

As it currently stands Im just a little short of 20 hours of fun into the game, and from what I assume the story has just begun. Gameplay is fantastic, battles flow incredibly, the story and subplots are very interesting, and I am loving the characters personalities. Over all it is everything a good JRPG should be.
