Set in rural NZ in 1949 the story line enables a wide range of characters (fly by nighter, conman, dreamer, businessman, housekeeper, war veteran, bookie, to name a few) to be intertwined into the story. Out to make a buck by conning the bookies with a ‘scheme’ the conmen race through rural NZ with a fast pace showing what NZ was like then. Good props, costumes and vehicles. Ian Mune did a wonderful job in directing this film full of ordinary and hardcase people. The actors give an excellent performance. Brilliant performance by Peter Bland. Billy T James brings out his character as a crazy Mexican in a way that adds many laughs and shows what a clever actor he was. A must for any ‘classic’ library.

Nice to see a 80s movie It was funny as. Great for a laugh.
This is a classic kiwi movie, with classic kiwi actor, Billy T funny as every, Priness Tui amazing singing voice, and all the classic kiwi actor sad so many not longer with us, thats why this is a great movie, even back then we knew kiwi humour, a must have for those BT Fans, or those who like the old Kiwi movies
This film has some great comic timing from Peter Bland, the comic genius of Billy T James, the dramatic Don Selwyn, and Marshall Napier before making it big in Australia, among some good performances from many others. Also, the music of Prince Tui Teka features in it.
While predictable on many levels, it is an entertaining watch. The direction of Ian Mune helps keep the action moving along at a reasonable pace, and there are a few truly hilarious comic moments (e.g. the scene with the wooden leg)
Well worth the purchase price.
Rewatching this classic ruined the positive memory I had of it, disappointing.
