Excerpt from Criticism on Milton's Paradise Lost: From 'the Spectator'; 31 December, 1711 3 May, 1712 Before the appearance of thelaft of the Milton papers, 4 Volume IV. Of the fecond (firft collected) edition of Illa Sp'oflafor, which included the firfl'ten ell'ays, had' ly been delivered to its fubfcribers. The text of this edition {hows confiderable additionsand con-em So that Addifon was revifing the earlier, pollibly twig he had written the later of thefe papers. The eight papers formed part of Volume V. Of the fecond edition, which was publifhed in the following year, 17r3. Subfequently - ih the Author's lifetime - at leaf! One important addition was made to the text'f; but the farcity of early editions of flu Spcflator has prevented any further collation. In this way the growing text grew into final form: that inwhich it has come down to us. In the prefent work, the text is that of the original ifi'ue, in folio. The variations and additions of the fecond edition, in 8vo, are inferted between Words in the firfi, omitted in the fecond edition are difiin guifhed by having affixed to them. Subfequent addi tionsare 1nferted between which alfo contain the Englilh tranflations of the mottoes. Thefe have been verified with thofein the entlieft edition in which I have found them, that of 1744. The reader can there fore watch not only the expanfion of the criticifm, but Addifon's method of correcting his work.
