Description

Globalization is blurring the lines between once clearly defined groups of people, making cultural sensitivity more important than ever. Culturally sensitive art education can cultivate the ability for students to empathize with and care about others, but until now, few guidelines have existed to help art educators bring together those from dissimilar cultural backgrounds. Editors Manifold, Willis, and Zimmerman have created Culturally Sensitive Art Education in a Global World: A Handbook for Teachers as a source of useful models for teaching art to students from diverse populations in a culturally sensitive way. Section One (Commonalities and Contrasts) introduces concepts that inspire research and ground pedagogies that are sensitive to cultural differences and similarities. Section Two (Knowing and Honoring Self in Local and Global Communities) presents strategies aimed at understanding and appreciating Self as a prerequisite for developing empathy for the Other. Section Three (Dialogic Interactions-Looking, Questioning, Listening, and Engaging) describes strategies for coming to know the world as others know it without having been physically immersed in the everyday cultural experiences of others.

Author Biography:

MARJORIE COHEE MANIFOLD is Associate Professor of Art Education in the Curriculum and Instruction Department, School of Education, Indiana University. In her research, Manifold has studied the aesthetic sensibilities and artistic practices of folk artists in dynamic interaction with their local communities. This includes explorations of the artmaking practices and products of adolescents and young adults in online communities. Based on findings from these inquiries, she has developed curricula for teaching studio art online to students across national and international boundaries. She has presented at national and international conferences and served on numerous review boards of journals in art education, new media, and comparative studies in education; her numerous publications have appeared in peer-reviewed journals and as book chapters. Additionally, Manifold served as President of the United States Society for Education through Art (USSEA) from 2009-2011, has served two terms as a North American World Councilor to the International Society for Education through Art (InSEA), and is currently InSEA Vice-President. STEVE WILLIS taught art in public schools for 23 years prior to joining the faculty at Missouri State University in Springfield, where he is Professor of Art Education. He is a member of the Cherokee of Western Missouri and his research interests include: indigenous knowledge, issues of equity, Native American practices, tribal cultural construction, issues of arts assessment, service learning, community engagement, and spirituality in art. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) examiner, he has traveled nationally to conduct Visual Arts examinations and has evaluated IB Extended Essays from Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. He is a member of the National Advisory Committee for the Praxis II Art Education Examination; has served as a consultant for various schools, school districts, and community arts organizations; has presented at national and international conferences; and has published in and served on the editorial boards of several national and international journals. Steve is active in both the International Society for Education through Art (InSEA) as a World Councilor (2014-2017) and the United States Society for Education through Art (USSEA). He served as USSEA President (2013-2015). As a contemporary artist, he creates images concerning spirituality (www.stevewillis.org). ENID ZIMMERMAN is Professor Emerita of Art Education and current Coordinator of High Ability Programs at Indiana University. In her research, she focuses on art talent development, creativity and art education, art teacher education, feminist art education, leadership and mentoring, global art education, and curriculum and policy issues. She has authored over 35 articles, 20 book chapters, and 25 books and monographs and has taught or conducted workshops in more than 25 countries. She was the first NAEA Research Commission Chair and is presently an NAEA Research Commissioner. Zimmerman has received numerous university, national, and international awards; the NAEA Elliot Eisner Lifetime Achievement Award (2014) is the most recent. She also served two terms as a North American World Councilor for the International Society for Education through Art. She co-edited Connecting Creativity Research and Practice in Art Education (NAEA, 2015) and had a leading chapter published in the Handbook of Research on Creativity (Edward Elgar, 2013). In addition, Zimmerman served as editor of 14 NAEA Advocacy White Papers (2011-2012) and wrote one of them. She presently is involved developing and evaluating leadership programs for NAEA. Through the Prism: Looking at the Spectrum of Writings of Enid Zimmerman (NAEA, 2009), co-authored by Robert Sabol and Marjorie Manifold, summarizes her influences on art education through her own writings and those of her former students and colleagues.
