I wasn't looking forward to watching this, bought it because my partner likes things from this period.
I was shocked, watched it with my partner an two friends who also don't usually like these dramas. We were going to only watch one, but couldn't stop. Watched the whole season in 2 nights.
This show has great characters and great storyline. Can't wait for another season.
This series, or at least this season which is the only one I have watched, is superb. Its like a delicious piece of cake when you take one bite and think that's good and it just keeps on getting better. Unlike many historical dramas the characters seem fresh and real, but for their experiences being limited by the period of history they find themselves in, they could be people you know. They have a sense that times are changing, there are real conflicts of values and integrity, and people thrive and suffer in way that we can completely relate to today despite the quirky oddities of the time. There is also an insight into class that makes me recognise, as a person born from colonial NZ stock, that my recent ancestors have some of the same manners of speech and mannerisms as the servants portrayed in the drama. It explains a lot about the more egalitarian spirit of the so called colonies, when people got to escape from all that. A riveting beautifully filmed drama, I wait in suspense to see the next season.
Best series ive seen in years , cant wait to see season two
I loved this series when it first screened on TV, though it is still a bit confusing when the time periods jump and there's none of the usual ‘xmas tree in the corner, snow on the ground’ markers as you go. Still, a delightful and absorbing historical drama with lots of meaningful glares and looks between people, mystery and intrigue and so much going unsaid but understood.
What truely let me down was the special features – a ‘bonus disc’ with less than 20 minutes material and nothing that really went ‘in depth’ it was quite an anti-climax, expecially if, like me, you buy the DVD because you loved the show and can't wait to see more.
