William Martin, was a pioneer Methodist preacher, and his daughter is very proud of the fact that he gave some of the best years of his life as a missionary to the slaves Her mother was one of the earliest inhabitants of Columbia, her parents having come here from Scotland early in the last century. She was a writer of some note in her day. Miss Martin has Spent most of her own life in teaching, having been at the head of one of the most flourishing schools in Columbia for some years, later occupying the chair of Mental and Moral Science in Columbia College, S.
